Snowshoe and Dinner: Northwoods Gourmet Girl

Updated: Jul 12, 2020

Although there was not much for snow on March 3rd, an incredible group of folks showed up, both local and from the Bangor area for a snowshoe of the big cross country loop at Squaw Mountain with Northwoods Wellness Collective, the adventure collective I founded in 2016 and Destination Moosehead Lake. We ended up heading out with just our crampons on since there wasn’t much for snow. Without snow, there was still much to savor and enjoy this beautiful winter day! From an abandoned farm to animal tracks, every part was mesmerizing and just what we needed during the March slump.

Living in Maine, I have learned the only way to survive winter is to embrace it. Indulging in whatever winter activity excites you from snowshoeing, skiing, or perhaps ice fishing, when the snow starts to disappear like it was on this day, you get a little sad to see it go. See, mud season in Maine isn’t super exciting. It means that we will soon have huge frost heaves on our roads and our cars will appear to be painted brown from the amount of mud they collect. I will not be able to get out of my car without having mud striped across the back of my calves yet I know that spring is just around the corner and my favorite wildflower, bluets will crawl across the freshly sprouted lawns. However, this would not be the end of winter for 2018. As I write this, over two feet of snow is falling.

Now back to our adventure! On this excursion, we had the pleasure of being joined by DD of Love Maine Adventures. We have been connected via social media for quite a while, yet it wasn’t until my winter summit of Kineo that we finally met! She traveled to Moosehead again for another adventure-filled day. I am beyond grateful for everything that has come my way by sharing my desire to explore Maine with others! DD and I were meant to meet! It was on this day that we started to brainstorm many more amazing things we two power women could conquer, including more weekend packaged adventures! Stay tuned!!

After our snow "walk”, we headed to Squaw Mountain lodge and enjoyed the company of one another and some local skiers before heading to our private dinner with Northwoods Gourmet Girl.

Our dinner OUTSTANDING! When we arrived, we were greeted by candles in the snow lighting the way to the front door. Inside, we had two large farm tables ready for us! Joined by both the days adventurers and a few others joining us just for dinner, we were in the best of company.

Chef Abby Freethy served us a delicious cheese board, almonds that were beyond mouthwatering and a perfect shrimp appetizer. The wine and beer selection was wonderful and the ice tea was divine, a nice fresh reminder of the warm weather to come! For the main course, she created a mouthwatering spread that rotated throughout the dinner including sliders, Caprese salad, mac and cheese, crab cakes and much more. Dessert was beyond decadent! From cheesecake to flourless chocolate torte, there was no way I could choose just one.

Abby is a local legend, learn more about her story, food truck, and farm to table dinner here! I made sure to grab some of her products before leaving. If you haven’t yet tried her condiments or flavored nuts, GO GET SOME!

This was our first ever adventure paired with dinner, but definitely not be the last! Want to join us for a future event? Connect with us on Facebook and Instagram!
